Kudzu Zine Collective

  • The student will research and propose a final project for their final required course for the BFA in Graphic Design. Working both independently and with their professors, the student will create a project that addresses five different areas of design, with cohesive deliverables to accompany each of them.

  • The Kudzu Zine Collective is a zine store and library located in Fairhope, Alabama. This collective serves as a space for community and arts education by selling zines and providing workshops to spread knowledge of zine-making. Through identity, advertising, interactive, publication, and merchandise design, the Kudzu Zine Collective presents itself as a DIY artistic space open to anyone interested in participating.

  • To reflect the handcrafted D.I.Y. nature of zine culture, illustration and hand drawn type were developed and implemented into each deliverable of this project. The creation of the kudzu characters, seen in each deliverable in this project, were included to create a friendly face for the brand. The approach and execution of each deliverable serves to establish Kudzu as a creative space that is open to any person in the community who is interested in creating art.

Advertising

Advertising for Kudzu was developed by thinking of how a viewer would first interact with the brand and learn how to join the collective. It made sense to develop posters that would posted around town that encouraged viewers to come visit the collective for events. Instagram posts were also developed to showcase events and zines that are for sale in the store. To engage with the community and bring the store to different locations the “Zine Machine”, a van that includes a zine library and zine making tools, was created and includes a A-Frame sign to advertise Kudzu and its website.
